Drupal Spam Protection Using ReCaptcha

|

Using a captcha on your website is one of many ways to help protect it from spam and it just so happens that Drupal has a few contributed modules that make implementing one quite easy. Today we will talk about using the Captcha and reCaptcha modules to protect your website from spam.

A quick note about the reCaptcha module; we chose to use it on our site because we like the idea behind it and we also think it looks pretty snazzy. The idea behind the reCaptcha is that you help identify text patterns from old books that are being scanned for electronic records. The following is an excerpt from the reCaptcha website:

About 60 million CAPTCHAs are solved by humans around the world every day. In each case, roughly ten seconds of human time are being spent. Individually, that's not a lot of time, but in aggregate these little puzzles consume more than 150,000 hours of work each day. What if we could make positive use of this human effort? reCAPTCHA does exactly that by channeling the effort spent solving CAPTCHAs online into "reading" books.

Back to protecting your website... So, in getting this all setup you will need to visit the following links to download the code as shown in the screencast:

Please leave comments, questions and even suggestions.

That's an interesting take.

That's an interesting take. I disabled comments on my personal blog because I didn't want to be bothered by spam. I might consider something like this, because without comments, a blog is just an old-school, one-way method of communication.

I like what you've done with your site, Blake. I noticed all the spam on your previous layout. Isn't there also an Askimet spam blocking module? In my experience with Askimet, it's been virtually flawless, but I've only seen it installed on low-traffic web sites.

I do believe there is an Askimet module for drupal (http://drupal.org/project/akismet) but I havn't tried it out. I was using some other automatic spam protection module previously that learned what was and wasn't spam based on me telling it what was what for the first 40 or 50 entries, but that got annoying, and it didn't end up working well on the continuously changing style of spam. If anyone is interested in going with the auto spam detection route I'm sure akismet would be the best way to go.

Did I mention that on Sunday

Did I mention that on Sunday I cut my hair short and colored it fire engine red?
The bottle may have said "Red Birch" but the reality is Sharon Osborne, color that does not live in nature, sharp, spikey RED.
Years ago, before I started feeling adult and responsible, I had red hair, and then after a while I got into the natural look and being low key (this can be hard, as you know if you know me).
This evolution required less unique hair, well-tailored black clothes, and the constant practice of active listening(not always successful.)
Didn't do me much good, did it?
Joking aside (if it is possible to do that when your hair edges toward whore red), my new look feels good for right now.
