Learning PHP by O'Reilly Press

I picked this book up the other day for a friend of mine who has some html experience but no PHP experience or understanding of how a website is served. After reading through the early chapters to see if it would be a good fit for my friend I must say it was one of the best I could find for someone loooking to learn the basics.

It's quite a small book but I like that because it presents the basics of PHP in a thorough manner without boring the hell out of the reader. And weighing in at 368 pages it doesn't appear to be some daunting Encyclopedia Britannica to the inexperienced programmer.

Likewise, I would steer clear if you are looking to read up on advanced topics. Even those looking to upgrade from PHP4 to PHP5 as the topic isn't talked about significantly and emphasis is learning the basics of the language.
