Assembla: Free Online Project Management Tools

|

I'm a fan of project management and project control processes, call me organized :O. Thus, I like to explore the various options that are available for managing projects with distributed teams. I've used a number of them including BaseCamp, Unfuddle, and activeCollab (when it was open source, the open source project is now http://www.projectpier.org/) mostly on small to medium sized projects. But today I want to introduce a new site that I found that I think has a lot to offer... and yes it's free!

The new program I speak of is called Assembla. They offer free accounts that aren't as limiting as those that you might find with most of the other players in the market. Assembla also offers free subversion and Trac services that are integrated with their online toolset. Setting up these two services on my own server is possible, but not exactly simple, so I leave it to the pros and that way I can sleep at night.

I thought about attaching some screen shots to this post, but that would be dumb since you can go and and check out their website for your self and view their well written guide. So instead I leave you with the 5 reasons why I choose assembla over the others.

  1. Free account with little restrictions
  2. Intuitive interface
  3. Complete subversion and file hosting
  4. Ability to add multiple projects and control public/private access per project
  5. And did I mention free?

And for those of you who don't think know how to learn subversion or any other version control system out there, this is a great way to practice without having to configure your own server. Read up on how to use subversion with the free online subversion book, and if you mess it up, you can remove and add a fresh Trac/subversion install in 2 clicks with your new assembla account.

Note: Trac is an application that works on top of subversion to allow people to browse their subversion repositories online. This makes it much easier to see what exactly is going on when you commit and checkout revisions. On top of that, Trac also has integrated wiki and ticket management. It is in and of itself a project management toolkit, chances are you've seen an open source project using it for community interaction and management.

Good lists, you can try

Good lists, you can try another software, called projectforum,it is one good solution for a workgroup or team, that allows you to coordinate projects and teams over the web or Intranet. it is not free, just for try.

Is there any good solution

Is there any good solution that can be hosted by the users and it is free? Such as dotproject but better.

Thanks
